Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for Galaxy S2: Download It Here!

Samsung has begun distributing the Android 4.1.2 update OTA across the globe for a little while now. But if you haven't received your update and are getting a little impatient, you can install it right now using the Flash program "Odin," which is not at all difficult to use.
To snag Android 4.1.2 on your Galaxy S2, first you'll need to install Odin and Samsung's stock ROM. Sammobile offers both as downloads, but because it can be painfully slow to download them from their site, we're offering them to you on our servers as well. Here you can download Samsung's stock ROM, and here you can download Odin. Obligatory warning: AndroidPIT cannot be held responsible if you follow our instructions incorrectly and end up damaging your phone.

Here's How to Install The Update on Your Galaxy S2:

1. Download Odin and the firmware on your PC (links above) and extract the files, placing them in the folder of your choice.
2. Secure your smartphone with Ultimate Backup because you are going to need to return your phone to factory settings and clear all caches. Theoretically, it's possible to install the update without wiping your device, but there's risk that your phone then won't run smoothly.
3. Turn off your device. Then start it in recovery mode by holding the volume up, home button and power button simultaneously until a small green Android appears with a menu above him.
4. Use the volume buttons to choose "whip data / factory reset" and select it with the power button. Scroll down to "yes" using the volume button and select it with the power button again. Then repeat the procedure with "wipe cache partition."
5. Choose "reboot system now" using the power button.
6. Turn the phone off again.
7. Restart phone in download mode (home + power + volume down).
8. Start Odin on your computer
9. 10. Click PDA and add the unzipped firmware code: I9100XWLS8_I9100XXLS8_I9100FOPLS3_HOME.tar.md5 to PDA
Leave everything else unchanged and make sure that the "repartition" box is not checked.
10. Connect your Galaxy S2 to your PC via USB cable. In the top left of Odin, you should now see a box which reads 0:COM 12 (It may also read a different number besides 12).
11.Click "start" and wait until the green "PASS!" button appears. Wait until your Galaxy S2 has restarted before you disconnect it.
12. THAT'S IT!
If your phone gets stuck during the boot process, do not panic! This often happens during the Flash process. Try pressing the power button down until the Galaxy S2 turns off, then repeat steps 2 through 4..

Will network operators start charging for Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is quickly becoming a key part of almost every broadband providers' network strategy. But is the day soon coming when Wi-Fi will no longer be free?
That's a big unanswered question as operators signal they'd like to get more value out of their Wi-Fi networks.
According to a recent survey from Analysys Mason, on behalf of Amdocs, more wireless and cable operators than ever have deployed Wi-Fi networks. But many of these service providers see these networks, which are often offered to subscribers for free, as potential revenue generating assets in the future.
Most broadband service providers -- 89 percent of them -- have deployed Wi-Fi in some fashion to either offload wireless traffic or extend services to customers, according to the survey. And 40 percent of service providers indicated in the survey that they expect Wi-Fi to be more than a solution for simply offloading congested networks and are interested in using it to provide incremental value to their customers.
There are already a large number of operators who have begun monetizing their Wi-Fi networks. In fact, according to the survey 57 percent of service providers with Wi-Fi networks say they're making money in some way from those networks.
So far none of the big service providers, cable or wireless, have indicated that they'll charge for Wi-Fi. But as network operators see Wi-Fi as more strategic and as they add authentication and security to make the service more "carrier grade," there are some indications that service providers may be testing the waters when it comes to charging or adding limits to Wi-Fi usage.
For example, AT&T, which offers unlimited free access to thousands of Wi-Fi hot spots in the U.S., has added Wi-Fi roaming to its International data plan at no additional charge for consumers signing on to that service. But instead of allowing unlimited data usage in these hot spots, as it does in the U.S., AT&T has set a limit of 1GB per month for Wi-Fi.
To be fair, AT&T International data plan subscribers are getting an additional 1GB of data usage for the same $60 price, where previously they got only 300MB of cellular data usage. But the fact that AT&T has put an actual limit of 1GB on the Wi-Fi suggests that AT&T views Wi-Fi usage as something that has value and not just merely as best-effort offload.
The company hasn't said it will change its policy toward Wi-Fi in the U.S. But if history is any indication, there's the fact that wireless operators have revised service plans in the past in an effort to get consumers to pay more for what they use.
"People need to understand that services go through an evolution in terms of pricing," said Chris Nicoll, a principal analyst with Analysis Mason, who worked on the Amdocs Wi-Fi survey. "We've seen it in cellular, where early plans offered flat-rate pricing on wireless data. That helped users build up their usage habits under unconstrained plans. Then they moved to tiered plans and now multidevice plans."
But actually getting people to pay for Wi-Fi could be a tough fight says David Reeder, a vice president at Accuris Networks, the company providing AT&T with the authentication technology to offer Wi-Fi roaming overseas.
Reeder said Wi-Fi's inherent limitations as a short-range wireless technology make it tough to provide consistent quality of service.
"It's very difficult to offer quality of service in a Wi-Fi environment as compared to a mobile network," he said. "And I don't think it will ever be equal. And the carriers recognize this."
Instead, Analysis Mason's Nicoll believes operators will be more creative in how they monetize Wi-Fi.
"Monetiziation doesn't mean charging users extra for the service," he said.
For example, Nicoll believes carriers may sell information gathered from Wi-Fi access points to advertisers and marketers. He said information gleaned from Wi-Fi hot spots may be even more valuable than other location-based information that carriers currently have on their customers via cell towers. The reason is that Wi-Fi hot spots have a much shorter radius, making it easier to pinpoint someone's exact location. This would make it simpler for a specific retailer in a mall to target a customer with advertisements and coupons when that customer is just outside the store.
Networking-equipment maker Cisco Systems is already starting to include such analytics in its access point gear, he said.
Wi-Fi users would, of course, have to opt in to these sorts of programs, but Nicoll said that even aggregated Wi-Fi usage data that is not subscriber specific could be worth something to marketers.
Even though it's true that carriers access unlicensed wireless spectrum to deliver Wi-Fi services, and that the equipment used to set up these networks is relatively inexpensive compared with cellular equipment, the cost of delivering high capacity, reliable Wi-Fi coverage is not inconsequential.
"The spectrum may be free," Nicoll said. "But the backhaul isn't."
Indeed the data links that are used to connect the Wi-Fi hot spot into the carrier's core network are not cheap. And Nicoll admits there is a chance that operators may be tempted to charge higher fees for access to this service or count usage toward monthly data cap totals. But he said it's more likely network operators will simply find other ways to make money.
"Wireless carriers understand that their customers are not a bottomless pit of revenue," he said. "They have a limit on what they will pay for service. And they are already paying a lot for data services."

Apple, Google chiefs face grilling on 'no-poaching'

Plaintiffs' attorneys said US District Court Judge Lucy Koh endorsed questioning Cook, Schmidt, as well as Intel head Paul Otellini, after reasoning that high-level executives would know about restrictions on hiring talent.
During a hearing Thursday in her courtroom in the California city of San Jose, Koh referred repeatedly to email evidence that included a request in 2007 by then Apple chief Steve Jobs that Google stop recruiting Apple workers.
While Cook was not mentioned in the email messages, it was reasonable to expect that his position as chief operating officer included being kept apprised of issues involving employee expenses, the judge said.
Cook took over as Apple chief in 2011 after Jobs stepped down due to a battle with cancer, which claimed his life.
Schmidt was scheduled for deposition on February 21, while Intuit chief and Apple board member Bill Campbell was slated to be deposed the fifth of that month, according to court documents. The date of Cook's deposition has not been set.
The lawsuit filed in 2011 accuses a set of technology companies of stifling careers and earnings prospects of employees by agreeing not to "poach" one another's workers.
Lawyers representing the plaintiffs have asked Koh to grant them class-action status to represent all workers who may have been affected. A jury trial is set to begin in November.
"We're pressing forward to comply with the court schedule and get the case ready for trial in November," said plaintiffs' attorney Brendan Glackin of the Lieff Cabraser law firm in San Francisco.
The civil suit followed the settling of restraint of trade litigation by the US Justice Department due to the "no-poaching" agreement.

The share of smartphone service subscribers relying on Google's Android software inched up to 53.7 percent in the three months leading up to December, while Apple's portion grew to 35 percent from 34.3 percent, comScore reported.
The most popular mobile phones were made by South Korean consumer electronics titan Samsung, whose handsets were used by 26.9 percent of US telecom service subscribers, according to comScore.
Apple's coveted iPhones accounted for 18.5 percent of subscribers in the overall mobile phone market, up from 17.1 percent at the end of August.
Figures showing that the California companies are tightening their grips on the smartphone market were released as London-based Canonical weighed in with a business-oriented smartphone platform.
Canonical announced a smartphone interface version of its Ubuntu desktop computer operating system based on open-source Linux code.
Ubuntu smartphones will be able to dock with keyboards and monitors to provide personal computer capabilities, according to Canonical.
"We expect Ubuntu to be popular in the enterprise market, enabling customers to provision a single secure device for all PC, thin client and phone functions," Canonical chief executive Jane Silber said in a release.
"We also see an opportunity in basic smartphones that are used for the phone, SMS, web and email."
Dell, Lenovo, and Hewlett Packard are listed among computer makers who build Ubuntu into machines for the global market. Ubuntu runs on more than 20 million desktop computers, according to Canonical.
Smartphones powered by Ubuntu are not expected to be available until late this year or early next year.

South Korea's LG Electronics launched Wednesday sales of its new television using a next-generation display that the company hopes will drive growth against giant rival Samsung.
The electronics giant began accepting pre-orders for the TV that features an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, in the world's first commercial sales of such TV sets.
OLED TVs don't require separate backlights and thus are thinner, consume about 20 percent less power and offer a sharper picture than conventional flat-panel sets.
The LG OLED model, 55 inches wide but just 0.16 inches (four mm) thick, was crowned best gadget of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last year, trumping a similar-size Samsung set.
"We will launch the OLED TV in North America, Europe and elsewhere in Asia in the first quarter to secure a leading position in this next-generation TV market," the company said in a statement.
The TV comes with a whopping price tag of 11 million won ($10,357), as manufacturers still struggle to cut the cost of mass-producing the delicate panels.
Samsung Electronics aims to start sales of its own OLED TVs later this year, although OLED displays are already used on its popular Galaxy S and Note smartphones.
Struggling Japanese TV giants Sony and Panasonic also teamed up last year to jointly develop OLED panels in a bid to catch up with the South Korean competitors.
Market researcher DisplaySearch estimated global sales of OLED TVs in 2013 would reach around 50,000 units and increase sharply to more than 7.0 million units in 2016.
"Sony and Panasonic last year teamed up for joint development but they are nearly two years behind in terms of the technological gap with us," LG said.
