Nokia Asha 305 scoops top MWC prize for ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’
At Mobile World Congress today, the Nokia Asha 305 picked up the award for ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’ in the GSMA Global Mobile Awards for 2013.
The winners were unveiled today in a ceremony hosted by comedian, David Walliams.
Decided by a panel of esteemed journalists and analysts, the award rewards many thousands of hours of work by talented engineers and designers. Plus all the work done by their forerunners, of course, whose experience the Nokia Asha 305 builds upon.
In fact, three Nokia devices were nominated by the judging panel in the ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’ category: the Nokia 103, Nokia Asha 302 and Nokia Asha 305.
But it was the Asha 305 that won in the final count.
“We’re proud that the Nokia Asha 305 has been recognised by one of the world’s leading voices for the mobile industry,” said Jussi Nevanlinna, Nokia’s VP of marketing, Mobile Phones.
“The Nokia Asha has gone from strength to strength, recently achieving smartphone status from Gfk and – as part of the full Asha Touch line-up of smartphones – has achieved no. 1 status in its price point across 25 countries.”

10 top tips and tricks for your Nokia Lumia 920
So now you’re the proud owner of the world’s most innovative smartphone, you’re probably wondering what it can do. The simple truth is the Nokia Lumia 920 can do tons of amazing stuff. Often, however, it’s the little things, which make a big difference. So, we scoured the internet communities of Lumia 920 users to see what tips and tricks they think everyone should know. Here’s their answers.
1. Talk to text
You probably know that you hold the Windows button down to access the speech recognition function. However, if you have a Bluetooth headset, you can turn on message so they are played to you. The phone will read messages to you and you can reply, edit, send text messages using only your voice. It’s a safe way to text and drive.
2. App control
Hold the back button to zoom out and see your open apps. Pressing back again will return you to your last opened app, pushing back again will close the app, and tapping the the back button a few times will close all the apps.
3. Stay notified
Go to settings and then to lock screen. Tap app to show quick status – This is where you choose to be notified if you want to know how many missed phone calls, text messages, emails, etc. Get the battery saver app and you’ll be able to see what your current battery level is without unlocking the phone.
4. Take a screenshot.
Press the unlock button and the windows button at the same time to take a screenshot of your phone.
5. Unfreeze your phone
If your Nokia Lumia 920 ever freezes up and you turn it off and it won’t turn back on, don’t panic. Instead, hold down the volume button, the unlock button, and the button to take photos until the phone vibrates.
6. Better lockscreen
Go to settings and then to lock screen. If you tap background, you can auto change your lock screen with photos or Facebook or use apps. Some cool ones include Astronomy Lock Screen, NASA Image of the Day and Accuweather.
7. Keep organized
Go to settings and then to lock screen. Tap Notifications – Default for this is calendar so if you are business oriented it’s a great way to have your next meeting right there on the front screen.
8. Keep track of your data
You can pin your wireless, data, and Bluetooth connections to the start screen with ConnectivityShortcuts. This is tons easier than going into “settings” each time you want to toggle these connections.
9. Pin contacts to start screen
To pin contacts go to any contact and do a long press and hit pin to start screen. This has the added benefit of showing their updated Facebook status when it changes. In fact you can pin nearly anything to the start screen. Apps obviously but songs, artists, playlists, people, pictures, videos, etc as well.
10. Stay up to date with groups
Make groups for the people that you really want to see updates on, and then pin the groups. You can have a tile for family, close friend and work colleagues, in fact any grouping you can imagine. Then all the updates from those groups appear on their respective live tiles.

Life as a new Nokia Asha user
I’ve spent the past decade using all sorts of mobile phones, and have lived happily with loads of different Nokia handsets. The Nokia Asha 308 is the latest arrival, and it offers a number of key differences. For a start, it’s the first Asha device I’ve used. So what’s it like?
With a 3-inch screen, the Asha 308 is physically smaller than most touchscreen smartphones, and it feels a lot nicer in the hand because of it. It’s a curvy design, it’s lightweight, and it’s a really nice phone to hold.
Even as a complete newcomer to the Asha range, I found it really easy to navigate the Nokia OS on the Asha 308, flicking, tapping and swiping my way around in seconds. The capacitive screen is lovely and responsive, and shows just how far affordable handsets have come.
One thing I loved about the Asha was the ease with which the dialer can be brought up. You can end up prodding at a tiny icon to reach a numeric keypad on so many expensive touchscreen phones these days; with the Asha it’s just a swipe to the right.
Adding shortcuts to the homescreen is just as easy; simply tap and hold the screen, and then pick an app. If you don’t want to access the app from the homescreen, click the menu and select it from the list. Facebook and Twitter are both pre-installed, and it’s easy to stay in touch on the go.
Obviously there are some big differences between the Asha 308 and Nokia’s Lumia devices – there’s no Wi-Fi, for instance, and 3G and 4G connectivity is also omitted. It’s not a problem though, as the Nokia Xpress Browser uses compression technology to require up to 90 per cent less data, and web pages are genuinely quick to load. Quicker, often, than other smartphones on 3G. If Wi-Fi is a must though, you can always opt for the Nokia Asha 309, which adds wireless networking to the mix.
Nokia Maps makes an appearance, and although there’s no GPS, it’s still incredibly useful. In this case, you can get an approximate location via your network operator, and it’s still a really useful app for checking out the local area.
The choice of games is one of the biggest pluses for me though, including Worms 2011 Armageddon, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and the Sims 3. They ‘re titles that were a staple of consoles and PCs when I was growing up, and they’re just as much fun on the small screen. It makes the Asha 308 perfect for younger users wanting to be entertained.
The Asha 308 also has some neat hardware tricks up its sleeve, such as the hot-swappable second SIM card. Situated right next to the memory card reader, it’s easy to add a second SIM at any point, making it perfect for those with both business and personal numbers, or even to share between two people. With the second SIM added, you can simply select which number to use when sending messages and so on.
Overall, it’s the efficiency of the Asha 308 that’s the most surprising though. It did everything I asked of it, running smoothly and without lag. Even the games ran at an impressive pace. I absolutely loved the fact the battery lasts for days between charges, helped by the relatively small screen and efficient OS. It may not be quite as desirable as the latest Lumia handsets, but it’s a great all-round package.

The Nokia Lumia 920 will cost around INR 38199, while the Lumia 820 will retail at around INR 27559. The price of the Lumia 620 will be announced when it goes on sale.
